About Villa del Balbianello

Built in 1787 for Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini on the tip of a wooded promontory at Lenno, Villa del Balbianello keeps the two bell towers of the Franciscan house that stood here before it. Its last owner, the explorer Guido Monzino, left it to the nation in 1988 with his Everest maps and instruments still in the rooms. How to get there

No road reaches the villa and there is no car park at it. You arrive by boat at its own pier or on foot from Lenno, about a kilometre uphill. The ferries, the taxi-boat and the parking situation are all worth settling before the day rather than on it.

Do I need to book Villa del Balbianello tickets in advance?

Yes, in high season. Slots are timed and the busiest summer dates go before the day itself, which is why several of the boat trips here bundle entry with the crossing. Between November and March there is far less pressure, but the property keeps a seasonal calendar, so check the date you want before you build a day around it.

What is the cancellation policy on these tours?

Most give you a full refund up to 24 hours before departure. Three do not: the shared boat from Bellagio, the ferry-and-garden ticket and the guided villa visit all need seven days' notice for a full refund. What ticket types does Villa del Balbianello have?

There is a garden ticket and a garden-and-villa ticket, and they open different amounts of the property. The garden ticket covers the terraces, the loggia from outside and the grounds. The guided visit adds the interior, including the panelled rooms and the expedition museum.

Is the inside of the villa included?

Only on the guided visit. Every other product here opens the garden and the terraces, and the rooms stay shut. If seeing inside matters to you, book the guided admission rather than a garden ticket.

How much does entry cost?

Entry is priced by the property and changes from season to season, so the figure to trust is the one on your booking screen at the moment you book. The lowest all-in price starts from $34, which covers the boat across from Lenno and garden entry together. Every figure you see is the operator's own, shown as they set it.

Are entries timed?

Yes. Your ticket carries a slot and the gate holds visitors until it comes round, so arriving early does not get you in early. Give yourself half an hour at Lenno beforehand rather than cutting the crossing fine.

Can I drive to Villa del Balbianello?

No. There is no road to the villa and no car park at it, because it sits on a promontory with water on three sides. You arrive by boat at its own pier, or on foot from Lenno along the lakeside path.

Where do I park?

In Lenno, and the car parks there fill early in summer. Arriving before mid-morning or coming by ferry from another port both work better than circling the front at midday. If you are staying on the lake, leaving the car behind for the day is usually the easier call.

How long is the walk from Lenno?

Around a kilometre, and it climbs. Allow thirty to forty-five minutes at an unhurried pace, longer in heat, and rather less on the way back down. The path is made up throughout and needs no special footwear beyond shoes with grip.

Is there a taxi-boat from Lenno?

Yes, and it runs the same stretch as the walk for a few euro each way. It leaves from the Lenno front and lands at the villa's pier in about ten minutes. Booking a crossing that already includes that transfer saves you arranging it on the day.

Is Villa del Balbianello wheelchair accessible?

The property is difficult for wheelchair users: the approach climbs and the garden is built in terraces linked by steps. Two of the products here state plainly that they are not suitable for wheelchair users. One private charter is listed as wheelchair and stroller accessible for the boat itself, which makes the lake side of the day workable.

Who built Villa del Balbianello?

The villa was built in 1787 for Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini, on the site of a Franciscan house whose two bell towers still stand. Later owners included the Arconati Visconti family and the American Butler Ames. Its last private owner left it to the nation.

What is the loggia?

The loggia is the arcaded terrace building at the top of the garden, and it is the shape everyone recognises. Its arches look out in two directions, one arm of the lake on each side. You can walk up to it on any garden ticket.

How long should I allow for a visit?

Two hours inside the gate is comfortable for the garden, and closer to three if you take the guided visit and the interior. Add the crossing and the climb at either end and a self-organised trip fills half a day. The full-day tours build that in and add Bellagio.
